What Is AISEO and GEO? The New SEO Explained

AISEO, AEO, and GEO are the three disciplines replacing classic SEO as AI answer engines take over discovery. Here's what each one actually means.

Futuristic neural network sphere representing AI Search Engine Optimization and Generative Engine Optimization

AISEO (AI Search Engine Optimization) is the practice of optimizing content so AI answer engines — ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, Claude — understand, trust, and cite it. GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) is the subset focused on getting included in generated answers. AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) focuses on directly answering user questions. Together they're replacing classic keyword SEO.

The three acronyms, untangled

AEO — Answer Engine Optimization

Older term, originally about Google's featured snippets and voice search. Now repurposed: structuring content as direct, self-contained answers so any answer engine can extract them.

GEO — Generative Engine Optimization

Newer term specifically about *generative* answer engines (the ones that synthesize a response rather than just link to one). Focuses on being included in the synthesized answer and, ideally, cited as a source.

AISEO — AI Search Engine Optimization

The umbrella. Covers AEO, GEO, LLM SEO, entity optimization, and the technical signals (schema, structured data, semantic clarity) that make all of the above work.

In practice, most agencies use these interchangeably. The shared idea: optimize for AI selection, not just blue-link rankings.

Why this matters now

Google AI Overviews ship to billions of searches. ChatGPT and Perplexity each handle hundreds of millions of queries weekly. A growing share of high-intent traffic never reaches a traditional SERP — the AI answers it and the user moves on. If you're not cited in the answer, you don't exist.

What's different from classic SEO

| Classic SEO | AISEO/GEO |

|---|---|

| Keywords and rankings | Entities and answers |

| Match query phrasing | Match user intent semantically |

| Earn the click | Earn the citation |

| Optimize one page per keyword | Build topical authority across clusters |

| Schema is nice-to-have | Schema is foundational |

The five pillars of AISEO

  • Entity clarity — your business, services, and people defined unambiguously.
  • Direct-answer structure — 40–60 word lead paragraphs AI engines can quote.
  • Topical authority — comprehensive coverage of your subject, not isolated posts.
  • Trust signals — author credentials, citations, consistent cross-platform identity.
  • Technical extractability — clean schema, semantic HTML, fast rendering.
  • Where to go deeper

If you're starting from scratch, AISEO isn't a campaign you run for a quarter — it's the new baseline for being findable. Traffic9 Media builds it into every engagement.
